Parking near Scarborough South Bay
If you’re staying close to the town centre and the amusements during your trip to Scarborough, I recommend you find a car park close to South Bay, so you can unload your beach toys, bags and picnic and head straight to the beach, without a long walk.
West Pier Car Park is as close you can get to Scarborough South Bay beach, as it is located at the other side of the RNLI lifeboat station next to the access to the beach.
This car park can get full early during peak times so we recommend getting there early. If West Pier Car Park is full, head down Foreshore Road to South Bay Underground Car Park which is the next closest option for accessing the beach.
Parking near Scarborough North Bay
Scarborough’s North Bay is generally much quieter as there are fewer amenities around. The most convenient car parking for North Bay beach is Marine Drive, which is just across the road from the beach itself.
Whilst there are over 350 spaces, these do tend to get full early on, although people come and go throughout the day, so you should find a space eventually.
There is also Northstead Lower and Northstead Upper car parks which are just a 2 minute walk from North Bay beach and don’t get as full (lower car park tends to be full quicker than the upper car park).
Scarborough Park and Ride
If you don’t fancy battling the traffic into Scarborough, you can use one of the two park and ride sites in Scarborough, which offer free parking (A64 Seamer Road and A165 Filey Road).
I have written a guide on Scarborough park and ride which has more information available including pricing and opening times.
Free parking in Scarborough
If you’re quite happy with a bit of a walk and you are more concerned about saving money, there’s a few places you can park for free in Scarborough so you can avoid hefty car parking charges.
There are no parking restrictions on the following streets in Scarborough, so you can park for free for as long as you need:
- South Cliff Road
- Northstead Manor Drive
- Holbeck Road (North)
- Weaponess Park
- Mountside
- Granville Road
- Lonsdale Road
I tend to come in via the A165 Filey Road and use South Cliff Road.

The walk down to Scarborough’s South Bay takes around 15-20 minutes, but in the Summer its a lovely walk, even in the evening.
The road is wide and has plenty of space, even for large cars or even small vans. Always remember to be considerate when parking and don’t block access for any residents.
Free parking after 6pm in Scarborough
If you decide to visit Scarborough in the evening, parking is free in all council run car parks after 6pm. If you’re visiting during the day, you only need to pay for parking up until 6pm, even if you plan on staying later, so you take advantage of the free parking scheme.
