About Runswick Bay Beach
Runswick Bay is a picturesque coastal village and sweeping sandy bay located along the North Sea in North Yorkshire, England. Situated between the seaside towns of Staithes and Whitby, it is part of the dramatic coastline that falls within the North York Moors National Park. Known for its red-roofed cottages clustered along the hillside and its broad, gently curving beach, Runswick Bay is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful bays in the region.
The beach at Runswick Bay is a mix of golden sand and rocky outcrops, stretching for nearly a mile. At low tide, expansive rock pools are revealed, making it a popular destination for families and fossil hunters. Like much of the Yorkshire coast, the area is rich in Jurassic fossils, with ammonites and other ancient marine remains often discovered along the shoreline. The calm waters and gradual slope of the beach also make it suitable for paddling and swimming during favourable conditions.
Historically, Runswick Bay was a small fishing village, and traces of its maritime past can still be felt today. In earlier centuries, parts of the original settlement were lost to coastal erosion and landslides, forcing the village to relocate further up the slope. The present cluster of cottages, narrow pathways, and whitewashed buildings gives the bay its distinctive charm. Fishing continues on a modest scale, though tourism has become the main source of activity in modern times.
Despite its popularity, Runswick Bay retains a peaceful and unspoiled atmosphere. There are no large amusement arcades or seafront developments—just a small café, a few guesthouses, and access to the beach via a steep road or footpath. This simplicity is part of its appeal. Runswick Bay combines natural beauty, geological interest, and quiet seaside character, making it a treasured destination for visitors seeking a more tranquil coastal experience in North Yorkshire.
