Sandsend Beach
A peaceful, sweeping bay on the Yorkshire coast — perfect for surfers, walkers, and anyone seeking a quieter seaside escape.
About Sandsend Beach
Sandsend Beach is a wide, scenic stretch of coastline located just north of the historic town of Whitby. Overlooking the North Sea and backed by rolling cliffs and open countryside, Sandsend Beach is known for its expansive sands, dramatic views, and peaceful atmosphere. It lies along the edge of the North York Moors National Park, making it part of one of England’s most striking coastal landscapes.
The beach itself is long and gently sloping, with a mix of firm sand and rocky areas that are revealed at low tide. During low water, visitors can walk along the shoreline all the way to Whitby, enjoying uninterrupted sea views and fresh coastal air. The beach is popular for family outings, dog walking, beachcombing, and paddling, while its open space also makes it suitable for activities such as kite flying. Although the North Sea can be cold, the clean water and wide sands create an inviting seaside setting throughout the year.
Sandsend was once an industrial area linked to the region’s mining and railway history. In the nineteenth century, ironstone was transported from inland mines to nearby coastal points for shipment. Remnants of old railway viaducts and industrial structures can still be seen in the surrounding area, adding a layer of historical interest to the natural scenery. Over time, however, Sandsend has evolved into a quiet coastal village with a focus on tourism and relaxation.
Behind the beach, the small village of Sandsend offers a handful of cafés, pubs, and holiday cottages. The atmosphere is calm and unspoiled, without the busy arcades and attractions found in larger seaside resorts. The nearby cliffs and coastal paths, including sections of the Cleveland Way, provide excellent walking routes with panoramic views across the bay and towards Whitby Abbey in the distance.
Are dogs allowed on Sandsend Beach?
Dogs are not permitted to be exercised on the main part of Sandsend beach, but dogs are permitted once you pass the public toilets (towards Whitby). The signs are clear so you shouldn’t have any issues.
