Boggle Hole Beach
Boggle Hole is a hidden gem on the Yorkshire coast. Just a short walk South of Robin Hood’s Bay, Boggle Hole sits on the rugged coastline and is a great place to explore without the crowds.
About Boggle Hole Beach
Boggle Hole is a small, picturesque coastal cove on the North Yorkshire coast of England, located just south of Robin Hood’s Bay. It lies within the North York Moors National Park and is well known for its charming setting, historic connections, and peaceful atmosphere. The name “Boggle” comes from a local dialect word meaning a ghost or goblin, adding a sense of folklore and mystery to the area.
The cove itself is narrow and sheltered, with a mixture of sand and shingle that is revealed more fully at low tide. Steep cliffs rise on either side, creating a feeling of enclosure and protection from strong winds. A stream flows through the valley and across the beach before reaching the sea, shaping the landscape and adding to the area’s natural appeal. At low tide, visitors can explore rock pools and walk along the shoreline towards Robin Hood’s Bay.
One of the most notable features of Boggle Hole is Mill Beck, which once powered a water mill. The restored mill building now serves as a youth hostel, preserving an important part of the area’s history while giving visitors a place to stay. Nearby woodland and paths contribute to the quiet, rural character of the cove, making it a popular spot for walkers and families looking for a more relaxed coastal experience.
Boggle Hole also has strong links to local legends and literature. It is associated with tales of smugglers and ghostly figures, which reflect the folklore of the Yorkshire coast. The nearby old alum works and coastal paths further highlight the area’s historical importance and past industries.
Are dogs allowed on Boggle Hole beach?
