Thornwick Bay Beach
Thornwick Bay is located close to Flamborough and Selwicks Bay, all of which offer a more of a rugged experience than the popular beaches such as Bridlington and Whitby.
About Thornwick Bay Beach
Thornwick Bay is a dramatic and unspoilt stretch of coastline located on the northern side of Flamborough Head in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Known for its towering white chalk cliffs, rugged rock formations, and sweeping sea views, it is one of the most scenic spots along the Yorkshire coast. The bay offers a more wild and natural atmosphere compared to traditional seaside beaches, making it especially popular with walkers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
Thornwick Bay forms part of the wider Flamborough Headland, an area recognised for its important seabird colonies. During the breeding season, visitors may spot puffins, gannets, guillemots, and kittiwakes nesting along the cliff faces. The cliffs provide excellent vantage points for birdwatching, with panoramic views out across the North Sea.
A holiday park sits close to the bay, providing accommodation and facilities for visitors, while parking is available nearby. From the clifftop, well-maintained walking paths connect Thornwick Bay to other scenic locations along Flamborough Head, offering spectacular coastal views in every direction.
While the bay is beautiful, access to the beach itself can be steep and uneven, and visitors should take care when descending to the shore. The rocky terrain and changing tides mean it is best suited to exploring rather than swimming.
Are dogs allowed on Thornwick Bay Beach?
Dogs are allowed to be walked on Thornwick Bay but take care walking down the steep steps.
