Skipsea Beach
Skipsea Beach is located between Bridlington and Hornsea, with several other quieter beaches on the same band of coastline.
About Skipsea Beach
Skipsea Beach sits quietly on the Holderness coastline between Hornsea and Bridlington, offering a stretch of sand that feels both remote and deeply connected to the natural forces shaping this part of East Yorkshire. It is a long, narrow beach backed by soft, rapidly eroding cliffs—cliffs that tell the ongoing story of a coastline in constant retreat. This erosion is one of Skipsea’s defining features. Over the years, the sea has claimed land, roads, and even parts of old settlements, leaving behind a landscape that feels raw, exposed, and always in motion. Standing on the sand and looking up at the cliffs, you can see the layers of clay and earth that crumble a little more with each season, reminding visitors that this is one of the fastest‑changing coastlines in the country.
Despite the drama of its geology, Skipsea Beach itself has a calm, understated beauty. The sand stretches out in a long ribbon, sometimes smooth and open, sometimes scattered with rocks depending on the tide and the shifting shoreline. The beach is popular with walkers who enjoy the sense of space and the uninterrupted views across the North Sea. On quieter days, the only sounds are the waves and the wind moving across the cliff tops, creating an atmosphere that feels far removed from the busier resorts nearby. The rural setting adds to this sense of escape; Skipsea is not a commercialised seaside destination but a place where the landscape takes centre stage.
Access to the beach is unusual and part of what makes it feel so secluded. The main route down to the sand is through the Far Grange Caravan Site, where a purpose‑built slope leads visitors safely to the shoreline. Because of the eroding cliffs, access points are limited, and the beach is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties. Once you reach the sand, though, the openness of the coastline invites long, unhurried walks. The beach is especially appealing to those staying in nearby caravan parks, who often treat it as their own quiet corner of the coast.
