Kinderland – Scarborough’s nostalgic adventure park

  • by

If you grew up visiting Scarborough in the 80’s and 90’s, you may remember Kinderland fondly. The adventure fun park sat proudly on Burniston Road until the mid 2000’s and welcomes children of all ages who came to enjoy the range of rides and activities.

As of 2026, Kinderland as we knew it, is now hidden behind fencing, gates and overgrown trees, with only the water chute left to see from the direction of the Open Air Theatre.

What attractions were at Kinderland?

There were no loud or white knuckle rides at Kinderland, but rather more family friendly activities such as roller skating, go karting, golf course, slides, swings, climbing walls, seesaws, bridges, sand pits and trampolines.

The water chute was a separate attraction, mainly for the older kids, and in the lake, you’d often find pedalos.

There was also an indoor soft play area with ball pool, which was great when the weather wasn’t the best.

The gift shop stood at the very far end close to the picnic areas and there were also other snack huts located around the park.

How much was it to enter Kinderland?

We only have our hands on a leaflet from 1994, but even back then, the prices were affordable, especially for a full day out.

Prices ranged from £3.25 per person (under 4’s went free and OAP’s received £1 off the entry price) in low season (Spring) to £3.95 per person in high season (Summer). You could save yourself a bit of money if you entered after 4pm, which cost just £2.50 per person.

The park closed at the end of September and re-opened again at the end of March as was open from 10am – 5pm (7pm from 28th May – 4th September).

Where was Kinderland located?

Kinderland was just off Burniston Road, close to Scarborough North Bay, sitting between the Open Air Theatre and Alpamare Water Park (although neither of these were built back then).
